Troubleshoot Wizard -- Freeware --    98/98SE
 This is a workaround application created by MS MVP George Gedye- http://dundats.mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Win98 -that allows the user functionality of the Troubleshooting Wizards that are rendered non-functional after installing the MS critical update ( Q824145 ) in November 2003, which added a kill bit to the registry to prevent the ActiveX control Tshoot.ocx from being compromised.  Another earlier critical update disabled the TShoot wizards as well.  For more info see:  Help

 The application RegInfo3 created by ex-MS MVP George Gedye- http://dundats.mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Software - it will get information from your system for the following:
            The Operating System and Version Number         The type of processor (CPU) being used           Make and Model of motherboard if available
                   The Windows Product KeyThe                                  Windows Product ID                                      The Windows Installation Path
  If Windows has been properly registered with Microsoft             The Registered Owner                                        The Registered Organization
            The Computer Name on your network.

 The Registered Owner, Registered Organization, Installation File Path and Computer Name can be changed on your system using a simple input box. This comes in handy when you sell or purchase a used computer with the Operating System already installed and all you want to do is change your personal information.  It also quickly recovers the Windows Product Key when required to re-install Windows and all of the information can be saved to the Windows Clipboard for pasting into other documents such as a log file or a newsgroup post.  No learning curve.  Just run the file and click the obvious buttons.
Works with Windows 95/98/ME. Watch for an upcoming new version that will also work on Windows XP and 2000.

  Lavasofts Ad-Aware- http://www.lavasoft.de/ -detects and removes parasites related to adware, spyware and hijackers that have been installed on your computer. It does not prevent these parasites from being installed.

CWShredder -- Freeware -- CWShredder v1.59.1.zip
 Written by Merijn Bellekom- http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/~merijn/about.html -specifically to remove the many variants of a well known parasite Cool Web Search. Due to more important priorities in Merijn's life, continued education, and the ever increasing complexity in removing newer variants of the parasite, this is the last version released. It does not prevent these parasites from being installed.

 Inspired by MVP Mike Burgess and  created by James A. Eshelman- http://www.aumha.org/ -as a technique for breaking the HackDefender virus' ability to impede antiparasite tools from working. It does not prevent these parasites from being installed.

HijackThis -- Freeware -- HijackThis v1.98.2.zip
 Written by Merijn Bellekom- http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/~merijn/about.html -HijackThis lists all processes running, good and bad and offers the ability to remove them. Do not remove anything with it until you get advice on what to remove, HJThis will list many apps that are needed along with the bad ones. Removing items listed hap-hazardly without knowing what they are can/will create a royal mess. Read the quick start here on how to create a log file that can be copied/pasted into a forum that can provide assistance on removal of unwanted pests. It does not prevent these parasites from being installed.

Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3 -- Freeware -- Spybot S&D v1.3 download page
 Written by Patrick Kolla- http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html -detects and removes parasites related to adware, spyware and hijackers that have been installed on your computer. Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you share your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you worked on. And for professional users, it allows to fix some registry inconsistencies and extended reports.
