  By no means does my provision of this article have any intent for any ill-formed reason or purpose. I am an avid user of Symantec products and have been for many years. Unfortunately users run into many problems with Symantec products for several reasons, many after installing the product on an unsupported system or by installing the product without first uninstalling any prior version.

  No matter what the reason may be, many times the user needs to uninstall the product by other means after attempting to do so through Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs or the applications own uninstall without success.

  As well, there are many users new to computers and/or the web, that still have the learning curve ahead for experience and knowledge on what to do and where to look for help. Hell, even experienced web searchers have trouble finding what they require, and for this reason, and solely this reason, I decided to provide this article as a convenience.

  This article basically explains the steps to uninstall from Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.   A link is also provided in the article if you get an error stating that you must be logged in with a NIS Supervisor Account.

Removing and reinstalling Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, or Norton Personal Firewall (2006/2005/2004 versions)

Situation:
You were instructed to remove and reinstall Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, or Norton Personal Firewall (2006/2005/2004 versions). This instruction occurred either in a Symantec document or by a Symantec support technician.

Solution:
Use this removal procedure when there is a problem with Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, or Norton Personal Firewall and you must remove and reinstall the program. After you remove the program, you should reinstall it by following the steps in the section "Reinstalling Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, or Norton Personal Firewall (2006/2005/2004 versions)."


Removing Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, or Norton Personal Firewall (2006/2005/2004 versions)
Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, and Norton Personal Firewall should be removed by using Add/Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel. Follow the steps in this document to remove the program.

To uninstall Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, or Norton Personal Firewall 2006/2005/2004 through Add/Remove Programs

1. Exit all programs.
2. Do one of the following:
   • In Windows 98/2000, on the Windows taskbar, click Start > Settings > Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
   • In Windows Me, on the Windows taskbar, click Start > Settings > Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
     If you do not see the Add/Remove Programs icon, first click ...view all Control Panel options.)
   • In Windows XP, on the Windows taskbar, click Start > Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
     If you do not see the Add/Remove Programs icon, then in the left pane, click Switch to Classic View.
3. Click any Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, Norton Personal Firewall, or Norton AntiVirus entry.
   You may need to use the scroll bar to view the entire list.
4. Depending on your version of Windows, click Add/Remove, Change/Remove, or Remove, and follow the prompts.
5. Restart the computer.
6. Repeat steps 1–5 for previous versions of Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, or Norton AntiVirus that may be installed.
7. Do one of the following:
   • If you were able to successfully remove all versions of Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, Norton Personal Firewall, and Norton AntiVirus from your computer, skip to the section "Reinstalling Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, or Norton Personal Firewall (2006/2005/2004 versions)."
   • If you see the message "A Norton Internet Security account with Supervisor access must be logged in to uninstall this product," follow the steps in the following document:
     Error: "A Norton Internet Security account with Supervisor access must be logged in. . ." when uninstalling Norton Internet Security.
   • If you cannot remove Norton Internet Security because you saw a different error message, then go on to the next section, "To remove Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, or Norton Personal Firewall when Add/Remove Programs does not work."
